Have you participated before?
Yes, I have participated 10 times, but due to unfortunate circumstances only completed the race 8 of them. Our mast broke in 2024 and we had to return in 2025 due to uncertainties with the new mast in 2025. Now in 2026 we are aiming for a great comback!
What is your best memory from Shetland Race?
I have both some extreme disappointments and some some great positive surprises among my memories. From having to return to shore after almost a year of preparations and refitting the yacht to the best memories when we enter Shetland and realise that we are in the lead and chances of winning the line honnors. Not to mention also the beatiful sunrises at sea, greetings from whales during our North Sea crossings, or just the simple relieving feeling of entering the sunny inshore waters towards Lerwick harbour after a tough night of upwind sailing in rough sea. It’s always a fantastic sight!
Why are you participating in Fully Crewed class?
We're all about the fully crewed life. Why? Because with the right team and boat, more people equals more fun. It's about sharing the thrill, the laughs, and the teamwork.
What are your expectations to sail during nighttime, midsummer?
With a (yet again) fresh mast and spirits high, we're setting out to conquer the race incident-free and with a solid result. Those few hours of darkness? They're ripe with strategy and shifts in performance. Bring on the excitement!
How did you get to know about Bergen Shetland Race?
My father and uncle's adventures in the 80s and 90s, aboard their Confortina 32, echo through my memories. Their tales from the early editions of the Shetland Race are what first charted my course to these waters.
Planning any activities during the stay?
You'll find us at the prize-giving ceremony and afterparty at the Lerwick Boating Club. And I can't wait to finally set foot on the sands of the legendary "St Ninian’s Ayre" beach. It has been on my bucket-list for too long!
Do you want to challenge anyone to participate in this year’s race?
I would always wish for more First 40.7s on the start line. I know that one of our long attending competitors “Amaryllis” is not yet enlisted, but perhaps her new owners will be ready to join?
